Ah…the Secret Garden Dress…one of my favorite dresses even 3 years after I designed her. I just love her simple beauty. This is a pattern I pull out over and over. It never gets old to me.

Look how little my girl was back then…
Over time she has evolved, though, and I felt it was time to offer that evolution to you all. Originally designed as a sleeveless dress, she now has options for short, 3/4 and long sleeves as well. Her simple contoured A-line silhouette has become more refined and better-fitting. The choices for finishing her neck have gone from just a simple turned neckline to include thorough details on creating a beautiful traditional neckband and a fun, shabby chic raw edge reverse neckband to mimic the finish of her whimsical cascading flowers.

If you already own the original pattern, I believe you will be especially pleased with all the new details. Several new sizes have been added and it now has a size range from 3/6 months all the way up to 12 years. I’ve been listening to my amazing customers’ feedback and have worked diligently to make it as user-friendly as possible. The new PDF is now divided into 3 different size ranges so there’s no need to print the largest sizes when you only need a baby size and vice-versa. Lots and lots of new details have been added to the tutorial to ensure that sewing up the dress is as frustration-free as possible even for beginners.

Can you tell how excited I am to share this one with you?

Sooooooooooo happy to finally be able to share the Zinnia Dress pattern with you all! There were days I didn’t think I would ever have it ready to get out there but it’s done and I couldn’t be happier with it. I also could not be happier with the sweet photos by 4 Eleven Photography.

We’ve all been ooohing and ahhhing over her precious little model and I’ve been getting request after request for a pattern for the fun leggings she is wearing. I’m pleased to let you know that you just might already have the pattern in your collection of PDFs. The leggings were made from the Petunia Petal Pants pattern with just a very simple little tweak and I’m going to show you how to do it.

Ya ready? Here we go…

Using the Petunia Petal Pants pattern, cut out the FRONT and BACK pants but don’t cut out the ruffles. If you are using a stripe you need to be extra careful that you line up the stripes when you cut them out. This is the edge of my folded fabric showing how I lined it up. I have lots of practice in this. If you aren’t confident that you can line them up, don’t cut on the fold. Lay the fabric out flat and line the bottom of the pants pattern piece up with one of the stripes. Cut out. Flip the pattern piece over and place it on the fabric right next to where you just cut, lining the bottom up with the same stripe and cut it out again.

2. Measure the bottom of the pant leg.

3. Grab the fabric you want to make the banded bottom from and fold it over so that you can cut 2 pieces at once. Cut a rectangle with the measurement of your pant leg as the width of the rectangle and a length of 6 ½”.

My measurement was 7 3/4″ so I cut a rectangle that was 7 3/4″ along the width x 6 1/2″ long. (Which almost makes a square!)

Be sure the grainline is running parallel to the selvedge edge of the fabric.

4. Set the 2 rectangle pieces aside for now.

5. Follow the instructions for the Petunia Petal Pants until you reach the point where you would normally attach the petal ruffles.

6. Grab those rectangles again and fold them in half (right sides together) bringing the short sides of the rectangle together. Pin and sew. Press seam. You have somewhat of a tube now.

7. Turn the tube right side out and fold it in half bringing the open ends together. Now you have a band.

8. Hold the band with the folded edge at the top and put the bottom of the pant leg down into the band until the unfinished edge of the pants meet up with the unfinished edges of the band.

9. Match up the seam of the band with the inseam of the pants and pin. Continue pinning the band to the pants all the way around and sew along this pinned edge.

10. Press your seam and admire the pretty banded bottom leggings you just created…and in no time at all. Easy peasy lickety split!

Adding a couple of buttons creates the perfect finishing touch.

Hope you enjoy whipping up some leggings this fall. I know I will be!

Thought I’d pop in and pour a little praise on my wife and let you know that there’s a lot in store in the very near future.

Beth has been hard at work on a few very cool patterns (and I say that as a man – the’re terrific) and they’ll be ready for release very soon. She’s really an incredible person, and I watch in amazement (if you don’t mind me gushing for a moment.) She’s been working on a lot of other projects, maintaining our house and teaching and rearing our 4 (hundred) children. She works really hard, really long and she loves us all through it. She knocked out an awesome art-nouveau dress for a local art show – really, really cool. I’m super proud, obviously. You go girl.

On the website front (which is more of my realm,) we’re going to have some big updates, including instant downloads of our bundles. So – you can order our awesome, money-saving pattern bundles and have the ability to download instantly. We’re going to have more blogging, freebies and we’re going to start offering ads. Oh – and the newsletter will be rocking in March. Sign up – it’ll be really great.

So – what I’m saying is this: Stay tuned and check back often. You’re gonna like what we’re up to. Plus – my wife rocks.

I have a couple of dear friends who are just crazy enough to believe they can change the world, Dru and Asher Collie, founder and CEO of Sole Hope. Over the course of a couple of years they have found many others who are just crazy enough to join with them and try it, too. I am one of those crazy people.

Believe it or not, LilyGiggle was once in the business of selling soft soled baby shoes. In an effort, to keep this post from becoming a novel, I will keep the details of the transformation from shoes to patterns to a minimum, but shoes were my first love. I developed a pattern for them soon after the birth of my first daughter and LilyGiggle shoes was born in 2006.

Because of that, my friend, Asher, contacted me after returning from her life-altering first trip to Zambia in 2010 to see if I could help her come up with a shoe. She shared with me what she had seen over there and what she wanted to do about it. I was deeply moved. A simply horrible parasite, that the people call “jiggers”, has a simple cure…closed toed shoes. Asher’s dream was to put closed toed shoes on the feet of all those children. A shoe that would protect them from the awful effects of jiggers that eat away the skin and causes illness. I know that this photo is so hard to look at. What if this was your child’s foot? I can’t imagine.

I was thrilled to offer what little bit of shoemaking knowledge I had to help and, with a newborn baby on my lap, and our collective kiddos running amok, Sole Hope began as 3 mamas sat around on Asher’s living room floor surrounded by upholstery fabric and old tires. Many days were spent that way as we worked desperately to create the very first shoe.

Well, Sole Hope has come a long way, baby! From those first humble beginnings it has grown into an organization fueled by passionate, committed people who are, not only, putting closed toed shoes on African children, one pair at a time, but also helping African men and women by teaching them the simple trade of shoemaking. This gives them a sustainable income and hope for their future. After many attempts and failures we finally created a shoe design that works and is being made in Africa right now. Can you see why this excites me?

Last spring, part of the Sole Hope team made another trip to Uganda and Zambia. I made a handful of baby shoes from my old LilyGiggle shoe patterns for the team members to pass along to some needy children. It was good to make baby shoes again. This photo is so precious to me!

And this one made me just plain cry when I first received it. To think that a darling little toddler in a land that still only exists for me in my imagination is wearing a pair of shoes that will keep her healthy…and that I made them with my own two hands. How cool is that???

After their return, it was decided that we would make more baby shoes. The original design was tweaked and sewn up several times until a fresh new look was created. This new shoe became the Sole Hope Baby Shoe and is now sold online and in boutiques around the country to raise funds for the organization. Made mostly from recycled materials, including a recycled rubber sole, each shoe is unique. They are handmade right here in the U.S. (creating jobs right here at home) and they are loaded with personality! I cannot even begin to describe how amazing it feels to know that the simple little shoe pattern that I made to put shoes on my first sweet baby girl has now been given new life and is generating income to help sustain such an awesome dream!

Here’s my newest baby girl, Hope, modeling the shoe for you. No, I did not name her after Sole Hope (she was born and named Hope just a few weeks before Sole Hope began) but it may make me like Sole Hope even more because of the name.

Look at all those cute shoes!

Okay, so why am I telling you the story of how I became involved with Sole Hope??? Well…so glad that you asked!

I want to give my readers an opportunity to act. It feels SOOO good to give. “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.”–Mother Teresa

Although, Sole Hope has grown by leaps and bounds it still has a long way to go in fully accomplishing its goals. Its potential is enormous but, like any non-profit, it needs money to get there. Right now, it has been given an AH-mazing opportunity to be awarded the money it needs to build a facility in Ndola, Zambia through a contest sponsored by Cultivate Wines. The money would go towards a building in Ndola, Zambia to serve the community there. This building would store sewing machines, materials, and finished shoes as well as provide the space needed to teach shoemaking and sanitation classes.

So what “small thing” can you do to help this cause so very dear to my heart? Well, first of all you can vote. The opportunity is a contest so Sole Hope needs votes to win. Now, the contest is full of great causes so you may find one there that you would rather vote for. I know many of you have your own worthy causes dear to your heart. What I’m asking you to do is just to go check out Sole Hope for yourself, watch the video and decide if you think it deserves to win $50,000. If you do, then, by all means…vote for it! You can vote every day until March 30th. That one minute out of your day has the potential to create long lasting effects for many people and for years to come.

If you have read this far…THANK YOU!!! I know this was a long post but I really did my very bestest to condense it as much as possible. I have SO much to say on this subject. Thanks so much for letting me share this with you.

I’m James – the business/graphics end of LilyGiggle, and I’m a bit of a nerd. I love art, but I also really dig science and math and all that left-brained stuff. Of course, I’m ruled by my right brain, so anything left-brained that’s couched in right-brained creativity really floats my geeky boat. Such is the case with these beautiful, hand-made quilts.

This dude, Jimmy McBride makes these incredible quilts of stellar objects – with the “Pillars of Creation” pictured – and I am IN LOVE.

At 12 large a pop, I probably won’t be sleeping under one of these bad boys – but I can certainly dream about it while I’m snuggled under the beautiful (if somewhat tattered) quilt my Aunt Elaine sent us many moons ago. It’s cosmic in it’s own way…

Check this dude out on Etsy – and check out his blog. It’s got lots of photos of his process, recipes for pickled eggs and tons of sufficiently geeky stuff. Sweet Monday! Have a great week!

Ever since the Rings of Ruffles skirt was released I have had the question asked over and over…”Do you make them for grown ups?” and over and over I have answered that with a decisive “no”. My biggest reason, other than I am just more into making children’s clothing at the moment, was that as the skirt got bigger it would get too heavy with all those ruffles and would be difficult to wear. As the inquiries grew and grew, though, I began to wonder if I was missing something. I just couldn’t see it as a woman’s skirt. I was afraid that the bulk would just not be flattering on a curvy body and that it was just too…well…childish. You may find it interesting with all the ruffle goodness of LilyGiggle that I, myself, am not a big “ruffle person” in my own wardrobe and so it was difficult for me to visualize such a thing. Today, it hit me, though. I began to see a way to make a ruffle skirt with some design changes and a touch of sophistication that would be something, even I, Mrs. Clean Lines, might wear out on the town. I also figured out a way to take away the weight and when it all came together in my noggin and I had my “Eureka!” moment I could not WAIT to get behind my sewing machine and knock it out! SuperDaddy took the littles to the Y for open swim and I had a few hours alone to make it happen…yesssss! Please excuse my wrinkly top. I was super eager to get some shots. Anyway…so what do you think??? I LOVE it! It is not heavy at all and is so stinkin’ comfy that I now know why my Loolie likes to wear hers so much. Should I make a tutorial and grade the pattern? I’m thinking XS to XL which would make it fit girls size 12-16 with a minor length adjustment and fit women sizes 0-18.
